About Con Dao & Con Son
The main (and only inhabited) island, Con Son, has plenty of unspoiled beaches, extensive coral reefs, and hidden lagoons.
Con Dao is an archipelago of immense natural beauty with forested hills, deserted sandy beaches, extensive coral reefs and hidden lagoons. 80% Of the land area is a National park offering jungle exploring with interesting wildlife such as the endemic black squirrel and the crab eating macaque, and is a shining example of good conservation.
Con Dao has a rather grim history. It served as a prison island for political prisoners during the French colonial era, when it was known as Poulo Condore, and in later years the Saigon regime with the support of the American government imprisoned their opponents here often in the infamous cells known as the "tiger cages". There are still numerous remnants of this gruesome past spread across the island.
With very few tourists Con Dao is a paradise off the beaten track and has been praised by the New York Times, voted as number 7 in the Lonely Planet Travel Guide’s best beaches of the world and as the 7th best place to go to in Vietnam!
